You Can Take It With You

by Dave's New York on January 26, 2012

in Boots, Carhartt, Coats & Jackets, Schott NYC, Timberland Pro, shirts

What’s with all that “You Can’t Take It With You” approach? We just don’t get it. You can always take it with you unless, like, the It in question is an elephant. You could theoretically take the elephant with you, but that would be more trouble than it’s worth. Then you have to worry about how to get the elephant into places like bars or concerts or Sunday school. So on, so forth. Maybe we’re not grasping the concept. What we do know is that taking some of our great clothing selections with you wherever you go is doable, desirable and way styling.

Timberland PRO 26038 Men's Insulated Waterproof Safety BootsTake a pair of Timberland PRO work boots with you. The Timberland PRO Insulated Safety Boots provide terrific warmth and waterproofing against the cold and the rain. Check out that full-grain black leather, with seam-seled direct-inject construction. This is a 6-inch high boot…though it looks about ten feet tall. Not only does it look strong and sturdy. It really is. They’ve designed it to perform without compalint and with perfection in the harshest of conditions. Available in Black.

Schott #DU738 Men's Wool Blend Car Coat

Take Schott NYC with you, while your at it. And the Schott Men’s Car Coat is a classy affair. Notice the detailing of buttons and seams, the single left chest pocket and the angled hand pockets. You’ll appreciate the 24-ounce wool blend. And you’ll luxuriate in the satin lining. Plus, there’s a rib knit collar inserted in there to top off the wool. Doesn’t itch. Take it with you.

Football and Clothes: A Good Bet

by Dave's New York on January 22, 2012

in Boots, Hanes, Jeans, Levi's, Red Wing, Underwear

Football, you bet. Super Bowl dreams dancing in our heads. As of this writing, neither Ravens nor Patriots, and neither 49ers nor Giants, have won their chance for this year’s king of the pigskin world status. Yeah, it seems a bit odd, this being the Internet of instant information and all that jazz, for us not to know. And yet there’s some old-world charm in not knowing. (Update: we just learned who won the first game.) (But we’re not telling.) Our prediction: a team whose name ends with the letter “s” will win this year’s Super Bowl. In the meantime, while you’re waiting, know for sure that these clothes are all winners:

Hanes Plaid Boxer Shorts

Hanes Underwear is a sure bet for comfort and style. And you can’t do much better for that combination than with Hanes Plaid Boxer Shorts. Plaid is glad to be on you, and you’ll be glad to own these boxer shorts of Tartan design—Tartan being of a particular clan from Scotland. (Don’t worry; nobody’s checking.) (Checking…plaid…joke in there somewhere.) You get three different colors in one pack, all with the same excellent design and pleasure. Made of 55% cotton and 45% polyester, they’ve double-stitched the seams for strength and made it so the fly will not gap.

Levi's 511 Men's Skinny Fit Jeans

Levi’s maintains a time-honored tradition for providing excellence in jeans, and the Levi’s 511 Skinny Fit Jeans honor the 511 family, with a twist. The Rinsed Playa version (pictured above) provides a wash that’s cleaner and darker. It’s clear of tinting or fading, and they’ve given it a small rinse for shrinkage control and added 2% of spandex into the cotton weave for the comfort factor. Otherwise, it’s skinny in the thighs, knees and ankles, sits below the waist, and sports wider belt loops to make a strong, er, belt loop statement.

Red Wing Model # 435 Waterproof Work Boot

You winning ways continue with Red Wing Boots. And the Red Wing Waterproof Work Boots give excellence of design, looks, comfort and security through and through. Though non-insulated, it’s thoroughly waterproof, with a fabric lining that keeps you dry and protected. The King Toe construction has a sole that’s been molded and glued, resulting in a flexibility for optimal flexibility and lightness. The footbed is removable. And it has great traction. Probably don’t want to wear them for playing football, but it’s very cool for everything else.

Covering Up for All the Right Reasons

by Dave's New York on January 19, 2012

in Carhartt, Coats & Jackets, Jeans, Levi's, Woolrich

So yesterday Wikipedia went dark. And Google had a black rectangle over its logo, with just a hint of the “g’s” blue tail peeking out from below. Protest stuff, making a statement over an issue. And it got us thinking about how we cover ourselves, too…with clothes. We’re not Adam and Eve—unless your name is Adam or Eve—and we’re wearing clothes because, well, right now it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere. And if you take advantage of these great selections below, you’ll have the extra added bonus of looking very cool while staying very warm.

Woolrich Women's Stockton Parka

Cover up and show off with Woolrich. We present the Woolrich Women’s Stockton Parka, a stunningly great garment that gives you all the advantages and none of the drawbacks of head-to-knees protection. It’s lightweight yet warm, thanks to an all-nylon tafetta liner and duck down/duck feather body insulation. It’s water resistant. The hood is detachable, and the hand-warmer pockets have zippers. Plus you can put it in the washing machine.

Levi's Misses - Mid Rise SkinnyLevi’s for Women gives you great looks to go with superb styling and comfort, and the Levi’s Mid Rise Skinny Jeans reflect that combination in a most excellent way. True to the name, they’ve tailored these as a mid-rise in the waist, with a slimness in the seat and thighs and skinny at the knees. So, slim yet comfortable, and tapered at the leg to fit fashionably over your favorite complementary pair of shoes. Available in Studio Blue and Night Storm.

Carhartt WC011 Women's Camden Parka

Cap it off with Carhartt for Women. The Carhartt Women’s Camden Parka provides excellent style, flow and warmth. Its shell is constructed of 50% wool and 50% polyester, with a lining of nylon quilting. Yes, that’s a hood peeking out the back—adjustable via the drawcord. Your two chest pockets have hook-and-loop closures. And those lower pockets in front add nicely angles lines. Available in Scarlet and Winter White.

Your Own Private, Moveable Virgin Islands

January 16, 2012

Tomorrow in history: On January 17th, 1917, the United States bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million. Adjusted for inflation, and factoring in some depreciation, not to mention some creative bookkeeping by this blog’s accounting department, that price is only just slightly higher than what you’ll pay for a quality garment from Dave’s [...]

The Encyclopedia of Style

January 14, 2012

Having survived Friday the 13th relatively intact, the Calendar Department of this blog now prepares you for January 15th. And on this day in ancient history (well, in 2001, which only seems like a long, long time ago), Wikipedia, that Internet encyclopedia thingamabob, went live, online, into the electronically connected universe. And we learned this, [...]

Friday the 13th: The New Black

January 12, 2012

What’s up with our superstitions? We have walking under ladders and the whole black cat thing. And then there’s Friday the 13th. No superstition gives us greater pause than our Friday the 13th thingamabob. We’re here to dispel the spell we’ve cast on ourselves regarding this. Because Julia Louis-Dreyfus (you know, Elaine from “Seinfeld”) was [...]

Ring in the New Year

December 31, 2011

Okay. The stroke of midnight tonight is all relative, depending on where in the world you are. In Rio, you’ve got fireworks on the beach. If you happen to be in Samoa, consider hopping across the international dateline and literally being able to celebrate 2012 twice, and in real time. In Minnesota, all the shopping [...]

Leaping into Leap Year

December 30, 2011

We’d wax all nostalgic about the year that was 2011, but we’re too excited about the prospects for 2012 to get too sentimental. Still, it’s not too late to tell you that 2011 was the United Nations’ International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry. Okay. Enough about that. 2012 is a leap [...]

Cotton: An Appreciation

December 28, 2011

As a public service, and because we wear so much of it in so many ways, we figured that an appreciation of cotton was in order. First of all, cotton is a plant; it grows as a shrub in the tropics and subtropics. Its fiber is harvested and spun into thread, and from that thread [...]

Your Only Blog to Riff on “Only”

December 26, 2011

The people in this blog’s minimalism department have requested we give some space to the word “only.” Only they know why (if only we know), but who are we to blow against the wind? Hang in there; there’s only a few of them: Only 364 days left to shop until next Christmas. Only 5 days [...]
